Born in Londonderry, New Hampshire, he was the son of Samuel Archibald and Eleanor Taylor.
He came to Truro, Nova Scotia on the 13th of December 1762 and was married there to Margaret Fisher on the 4th of March 1772.

'Although only about 15 years of age when he came to Nova Scotia with his parents he received a grant of land in the Township of Truro.
John Archibald and Margaret Fisher built their house on the front lot being the same on which the Episcopalian Church and several other houses stand in 1873. they owned the front wood lot on the south side of the street. John and his brother built the mills on the bank of the upland South West of the River Bridge. They dug a race for the water nearly half a mile along the west side of their lots. Here John and Margaret raised five sons and five daughters.'
