Roman Catholic Cardinal. He is remembered for his tenure as Archbishop of Turin during which time he was custodian of the famous Shroud of Turin. Born in Cantu, he was educated at Venegono and in Milan prior to his ordination as a priest on May 31, 1947. After teaching in Desio he held a professorship at the Seminary of Venegono from 1952 thru 1967 then served as a parish priest of the Milan Archdiocese until 1982. Consecrated Bishop on November 10, 1984, he was Auxiliary of Milan until appointed Archbishop of Turin on January 31, 1989. Continuing to serve in his post after he was created Cardinal on June 24, 1991, he was best known for his conservatorship of the Shroud; the Cardinal retired for reasons of health on June 19, 1991, spent his final years in Milan, having aged-out was unable to vote in the Conclave of 2005, and died following a protracted illness.
