Wilson Eliot Driver Shepherd, 83, of Lexington, died Monday, May 7, at his home.
He was born June 8, 1928, in Shanghai, China, a son of the late Gen. Lemuel C. Shepherd Jr., U.S. Marine Corps, and Virginia Driver Shepherd of Norfolk.
He spent his childhood on Marine Corps bases in Haiti and Quantico, and Newport, R.I. He was an alumnus of Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA, class of 1946, and the Virginia Military Institute, class of 1950-B. While at VMI, he was a member of the KA fraternity.
After graduating from VMI, he married Lola P. Steele of Washington, D.C., before shipping out to Korea as a first lieutenant in Reserve Rifle Platoon, A Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment, 1st Marine Division.
Upon discharge from the Marines, he moved to San Diego, where he earned a second degree from the University of San Diego, and worked at Solar Turbines until his retirement to Lexington in 1994. He was an avid tennis player, backpacker and equestrian, and a former member of the Rockbridge Hunt and Back Country Horsemen.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Sallie and Virginia Shepherd, both of Richmond, and two grandchildren.
Burial took place in Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk. Arrangements were handled by Harrison Funeral Home and Crematory.
