In 1985, he received the Palladium Medal from the U.S. Electrochemical Society, and in 1986 was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society. In 1989, he and his colleague Pons announced to the scientific community to have reproduced a nuclear fusion at room temperature with a minimum release of radiations. The news went around the world, but it was generally considered a scientific absurdity. During a recent interview Fleischmann said that would not have had to use the term "cold fusion".
