Nathan Winger aka Jack Newman aka Joseph Schaefer enlisted in the US Army 13 October 1916 serving in Battery C 1st Field Artillery. He was honorably discharged 4 June 1920. He worked as a butcher and a teamster before joining the Mickey Duffy gang in Philadelphia PA. He later moved to the Harry Stromberg gang and eventually worked for Benjamin Siegel and Mayer Lansky in the Bug and Mayer Mob. Along with his partner Albert Silverberg aka George Young, was given the contract to kill Abe Wagner a bootlegger and narcotics dealer. On 25 July 1932 Young and Schafer killed Wagner and his partner Al Gordon in St. Paul MN. Apprehended by Saint Paul Police Winger would serve 31 years in the Minnesota State Prison. Paroled in November 1963 he returned to Philadelphia where he reportedly became a bookie.
