Bell was the son of Minnie Ann Bowers and James Henry Bradshaw. His paternal grandparents were Lucinda Ellis and William Henry "Hal" Bradshaw. His maternal grandmother was Mary Jane Bowers. Bell and his first wife, Ethel Leta Bingham, were the parent of two daughters, Helen Oleta and Jessie Evelyn. He and his second wife, Jessie Olera Walker, were the parents of six children, Jerry, Shirley, J.B., Oleta Evelyn, Martha Joann, and Ray Dale. Bell was a farmer. His Yankee grandchildren didn't know him well, but he seemed to me to be an outgoing, gregarious man who liked to laugh.
