World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Derby, England, he served as a Private with the 1st Battalion, Sherwood Foresters Notts and Derby Regiment, British Army. During the Battle of Neuve Chapelle, France, on March 12, 1915, a very large number of the enemy who were massed on the flank of the 1st Battalion. Private Rivers on his own, crept to within a few yards of the German position and hurled bombs on them, which forced them to retire. Later that same day, he performed the same act on another enemy position, forcing them to retreat, which resulted in himself being killed. For most conspicuous bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross presented to his mother by King George V at Buckingham Palace on November 29, 1916.
