Martha Ellen Meade Austin was born April 8, 1873 and she passed away Jan. 17, 1961. She was married to William "Bill" Aston Austin on March 7, 1888 in Russel County, Virginia. The marriage license lists William's occupation as a Farmer. Bill was born March 4, 1865 and died January 5, 1921.

Martha Ellen was a strong, independent woman. She chewed tobacco. She put out a garden and grew her own tobacco and she worked her garden up into her late 80's. She was in bed the last few years of her life, but she still ruled the family home which was filled with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
