John was the son of Alonzo and Katie Jenkins Snoots. He never married and worked as a laborer. As a young man he played fiddle in the Dixie Serenaders, a musical group in Brunswick, Maryland. He was survived by siblings Arthur and Alonza Snoots, Lettie Wetzel and Minnie Caniford. His grave is unmarked but he is buried near several of his siblings.
