Hungarian Politician. He was a 19th century Hungarian politician holding the position of Minister of Justice. He was known as "The Wise Man of the Nation" and one of the greatest figures of Hungary's liberal movement. He negotiated the compromise under which Hungary gained some limited autonomy within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He supported the April laws, the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 and the Hungarian Nationalities Law of 1868. After studying law, he entered politics in 1833. There is a statue of him in Zalaegerszeg. There many schools and other buildings named in his honor. The highest monetary note in Hungarian currency has his image on the front.
