Enlisted, March 1, 1895 (Troop A had just reorganized into a Squadron), in Troop 2, Squadron A Cavalry, NYNG. New York City. He served in the ranks till May 2, 1899. He was appointed a Captain and assigned to the 1st NY Regiment, at Mount Vernon, NY.

He served in the 1st Regiment, NYNG, as the Commissary of Subsistence, till placed on the Supernumerary List, May 1, 1905, He was discharged as a Captain, Mat 21, 1921.

His brother William Silas Whitehead and brother-in-law Edward Rush Duer were members of Squadron A and served with Troop A, NY Volunteer Cavalry (Squadron A), during the Spanish American War. Two of his nephews Edward Rush Duer Jr., 1934-1937 and Pennington Duer, 1925 - 1940, were members of the 101st Cavalry (Squadron A).
