Frederick married Julia Anna Klier in 1872. They had nine children, although sadly one child, Ida, died at a young age.
In 1881 Frederick moved his family to Dakota Territory, where he settled on a homestead near Cando in Towner County in 1883. There he prospered, acquiring 2,700 acres by the mid-1890s and winning election to the North Dakota state legislature as a Republican in 1900, the year before his death. Frederick was an aggressive farmer who had already acquired 2,700 acres in North Dakota when he died of a stroke in 1901 when he was outbid on a piece of land he wanted.
