Revolutionary War Continental Soldier. While serving with the 2nd Connecticut Regiment Continental Line, Captain David Humphrey's Company, and at the request of General George Washington, he posed as a deserter and spied behind British lines in New York. For his bravery he was honored by Washington with a Badge of Military Merit, a purple cloth badge, on June 8, 1783. Only three such Badges are known to have been awarded by Washington. The badge would later become the Purple Heart. Sergeant Bissell retired in Upstate New York and reported his Badge of Merit destroyed in a house fire in 1813. He died at the age of 70.
