"Jerry Luke Thornton, 86, pioneer resident of Oakland and Douglas county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. F. Moore, at Green Valley, last night. He was born in Missouri, March 31, 1853, and came to Oregon and Douglas county when he was a young man.
Mr. Thornton taught school for some years in the Nonpareil vicinity, where he married Rebecca B. Hunt in 1875. After his marriage he purchased a farm and operated it until about 20 years ago, when he retired.
He spent almost a lifetimde in this county with the exception of a few years when he lived near Portland. Surviving are two daughters, Mr. R. F. Moore, Green Valley, and Mrs. Jenny Wagner, Portland; two sons, Ernest E. of Sutherlin, Geany Y., of Cottage Grove, and a brother, J. J. Thornton, of Eugene.
Mr. Thornton was a member of the Swedenburg church. Services will be held at the Christian church at Oakland Friday afternoon, Dec. 15 at 2 o'cock. Rev. R. W. Tindall will officate at the service, and interment will follow at Fair Oaks cemetery at Oakland. Arrangements for the funeral are in charge of Stearns mortuary at Oakland."
