Actor. Charles moved to France at age four and began studying acting very soon becoming one of the most appreciated actors from the best French film directors, especially among film directors founders of the French film movement of Nouvelle Vague. In 1963 the film director Claude Chabrol entrusted him the lead role in the film "Landru", based on the true story of the serial murderer, Henri Landru. He starred in over 40 films including notably "Une belle fille comme moi" (1972), "Peur sur la ville" (1974) and "It c'était a refaire" (1976), but the apex of his career as actor arrived in 1977 when the film director François Truffaut gave him the lead role in the film "L' homme qui les femmes aimait". In the last years of his career he devoted himself to the theater but his health worsened when he went for the last time on stage playing "le Marionnettiste de Lodz" by Gilles Segal, directed by Jean-Paul Roussillon. He retired from the stage in 1986, and passed away at his home in France a few years later.
