David H. Holmes, son of the late David H. Holmes Sr., one of the founders of the internationally-known fruit-packing firm Harry and David, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, in Medford.

There will be no service.

Mr. Holmes, 79, was president of Harry and David from 1955 to 1970. During his tenure, he founded Bear Creek Corp., bringing Harry and David, Jackson & Perkins Roses, and other subsidiaries under one umbrella.

He also was the founder, chief executive officer and president of Arrowhead Ranch on North Phoenix Road, Medford.
During his professional career, Mr. Holmes served on several other western corporations.

Mr. Holmes was born Sept. 12, 1922, in Medford. He attended local schools and the University of Oregon.

While growing up in Medford, he collected rocks on the Table Rocks. His hobby eventually included a fully equipped lapidary on his ranch.

During World War II he was a bomber pilot in the U.S. Army Air Force. Later he was a founder of Rogue Flying Service in Medford and owned, among other aircraft, a DC-3.

In the mid-1960s, Mr. Holmes took a two-year voyage with his family from San Francisco to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on his 85-foot motor-sailer, Nereus, serving as captain and engineer.

An avid hunter, especially of ducks, Mr. Holmes also was a fisherman. He bred, raised and trained champion black Labrador retrievers, and bred and raised champion cutting horses, one of which was a NCHA Futurity reserve champion.
Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Brooke; a daughter, Bonnie Holmes Stroh, Medford; a son, Scott Holmes, in Hawaii; two other sons Stuart D. Watson in Missouri, and Glen Stern in California, and two grandchildren. His sister, Nanette H. Tyson, died in 1993.
