Professional Baseball Player. Though she had a distinguished legal career, she is remembered for her two seasons as a pitcher in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). Raised in the Boston suburbs, she played sandlot baseball as a youngster, albeit against resistance from the neighborhood boys. A star of basketball, tennis, and field hockey at Winthrop High School, she graduated 1948 then tried out for the AAGPBL. Failing on her first attempt she was successful on her second and in 1950 was assigned to the Chicago Colleens. After compiling a nine win, nine loss record on the mound and a .298 batting average she was moved to the Battle Creek Belles for 1951 but pitched only briefly before returning to school. Miss Brown graduated from Suffolk University in 1955 then in 1965 earned her J.D. from Suffolk Law School and that same year was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar and began a long career as law librarian and professor at her alma mater. In 1970 she added an M.B.A. from Suffolk to her credentials then in 1977 received her degree from Gordon-Cromwell Theological Seminary. In 1988 she was part of the Baseball Hall of Fame's mass induction of the AAGPBL and its players. The league's tale is told in 1992's "A League of Their Own". In 1990 Miss Brown was honored by the Governor of Massachusetts for "outstanding service to women's sports" and in 1993 she was responsible for placing an AAGPBL exhibit at the New England Sports Museum. A 1997 charter inductee into the Winthrop High School Hall of Fame, she became the only AAGPBL veteran to write of her experiences when she published a 2003 memoir entitled "A League of My Own", was a lifelong member of the Union Congregational Church of Winthrop, and remained active until her final illness. (bio by: Bob Hufford)
