Albert Carpenter enlisted as a Private in Company F of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on September 10, 1861, for 3 years service. He mustered into Federal service on that same day. He was reported as wounded in action at Fredericksburg, Virginia, on December 12, 1862, and paroled in May of 1863 at Annapolis, Maryland. Albert was once again wounded in action at Wilderness, Virginia on May 5, 1864. He was on detached service with Company K of the First Michigan Infantry, by order, July 2, 1864. He was later discharged at the expiration of his term of service on September 27, 1864, at Detroit, Michigan.
