Her husband died before the birth of their only child, and she was called back to Spain to act as regent for her brother, who left Spain for England. She never returned to Portugal, nor did she see her son again. In 1565 she was considered to be married to the fifteen years old Charles IX of France. In her later years she retired to the Descalzas Reales Monastery which she had founded and supported the Jesuits. She also had contact with two of the Jesuit Superior Generals, Loyola and Borja.
