The Rev. Omar R. Burns, 86, of 921Lockwood Ave., Anniston, died Friday at Anniston Memorial Hospital after an illness.
Omar R. Burns was born in a Methodist parsonage near Prairie Grove, Washington county, Arkansas.
Omar, as a young man, entered Birmingham college (later to become Birmingham-Southern). He served as a Student Supply Pastor during his years on the Hilltop. After finishing college, he enrolled in the Vanderbilt School of Religion. Following his graduation from seminary, he joined the North Alabama Conference of the Methodist Episcopal church, South.

The Rev. Burns has been a Methodist minister for 60 years, 39 years under appointment from the Methodist Conference and 21 years as associate pastor of Anniston's First United Methodist church. He served church appointments in Montevallo, Northport, Dadeville and Aliceville, ALa. He was founder of the Senior Citizens Association of Anniston.
Survivors include a son, Dr. Francis R. Burns of Hannibal, MO; four step-daughters, Mrs. John H Melzer of Auborn, Mrs. Ben S. Burton of Leesburg, FLMrs. Phillip S. DuBose of Sumter, S.C. and Mrs. Milton L. Orr Jr. of Montevallo, AL. a step-son, Col. Henry O. Garrett Jr. of Roswell, N.M.; four grandchildren and a great- grandchild.
Rev. Burns was a native of Alabama. He was the son of Samuel Newton & Catherine Martha Wheeler Burns..
