Indian Wars Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Enlisting in the US Army from San Jose, California, he served as a Private in Company G, 8th U.S. Cavalry. He was sent to the Arizona Territory for frontier duty with the 8th U.S. Cavalry and took part in the Apache Wars. On October 20, 1869, in actions at Chiricahua Mountains, Arizona Territory, Private Elwood took part in an assault on the stronghold held by the Apache Chief Cochise. Private Elwood was shot in the right side of his chest while battling the Apaches but recovered from his injuries. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on February 14, 1870.
