Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned as Colonel and commander of the 87th New York Volunteer Infantry on November 19, 1861. He led his command during the Spring 1962 Penninsular Campaign, and was wounded and captuted at the May 31, 1863 Battle of Fair Oaks (Seven Pines), Virginia (it was erroneously reported he was killed, and New York City newspapers ran obituaries for him in June 1862). He was imprisoned in Richmond's infamous Libby Prison until he was paroled on July 17, 1862. When the 87th New York was consolidated with the 40th New York Volunteer Infantry in September 1862, Colonel Dodge was designated a supernumeray, and was honorably mustered out on September 6, 1862. After the war he became a successful stock broker, and passed away in Brooklyn, New York City in 1917.
