GRANTS PASS, OREGON MONDAY, MARCH 28, 1955
Geo. Griffin, Native Son, Succumbs
George H. Griffin, 80, who was born near Phoenix and had spent his entire life in this area, died Sunday, March 27, at the home of a daughter, Alma Fairfield, route 1, box 569.
Mr. Griffin was of pioneer ancestry, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs, Burl (sic Burrel) B. Griffin having crossed the plains in 1849 (sic 1848), when Mr. Griffin's father was 19 years old, and settled first in Albany. In 1850 (sic 1852) they took up a donation land claim south of Medford on Griffin creek, which was named for them. The claim is still in the possession of a cousin of the deceased.
Mr. Griffin's mother, Mary Ann Hamlin, crossed the plains with her parents when she was 11 years old. The family settled on a donation land claim south of Medford. Mr. Griffin's parents were married August 15, 1857 (August 13).
Mr. Griffin was born October 13, 1874, on his grandfather Hamlin's homestead near Phoenix. He was the eighth of 13 children, of whom only one brother and one sister survive him. When he was two years of age his parents moved to the Shan Creek district.
Mr. Griffin was married to Susie A. Everton October 26, 1898, in Grants Pass. They made their home in the Shan Creek area, where he lived until he retired from farming in 1938. His wife preceded him in death on December 26, 1947, and he had made his home since with his daughter, Mrs. Fairfield. He was very active during his life in the Shan Creek district, having helped to put in roads, schools and the original ferry there.
Both Mr. Griffin's grandfathers and his father were active in Indian campaigns in the early 1850's.
Mr. Griffin was a member of the First Church of God in Grants Pass.
Surviving besides Mrs. Fairfield are two other daughters, Audrey Conrad of Eugene and Gladys Hagar of Bremerton; two sons, Merle S. Griffin of Grants Pass and Dale Griffin of John Day; a sister, Lydia Wertz of Grants Pass; and a brother, B. S. Griffin of Alturas, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 30, at 2 p.m., at the L. B. Hall Funeral chapel, with Rev. F. W. Hopkins of Sunny Valley and Rev. George Gray of Cave Junction officiating. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial park.
