Janet Garfield Brown, 79, died after suffering a stroke while vacationing in the Bahamas. She was the wife of Alexander C. Brown Jr., daughter of the late John N. and Janet Dodge Garfield and great-granddaughter of late President James A. Garfield.
Survivors include her widower; two children, Alexander C. "Sandy" Brown III, and Cornelia B. "Bee" Elmore; two brothers, James R. Garfield II and John N. Garfield; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a great-step-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Frances G. Tillinghast of Cleveland and Douglas D. Garfield of Lower Waterford, Conn.
A private burial service was held on Cuttyhunk Island, her family's summer residence for 45 years.
