After serving in the Marines and NYPD, embarked on a football career as coach for Brooklyn Prep and Clarke High School in E. Meadow. Later became Head Coach of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy football team. With a two year gap when he was defensive coordinator for the University of Michigan, was head coach of the USMMA for nine years, retiring in 1975. From 1976 to 1999 he was a radio and television anlyst for Penn State football. Brother of Joe Paterno, he died days after suffering a heart attack.
