Former Bishop of the Diocese of Chartres, Monsignor Michel Joseph Kuehn was born in Saint-Dié, Vosges, France, on October 7, 1923, in a family of seven children, of whom three became priests. His brother Louis (1922 - 2008), was the Bishop of the Diocese of Meaux, Seine-et-Marne.

Undergoing studies in civil law and social sciences, Michel was ordained to the priesthood in Saint-Dié on July 12, 1947, by Msgr. Emile-Arsène Blanchet. Vicar of Remiremont, Vosges, Kuehn was successively appointed Almoner and parish priest of Vittel, and vicar general of St-Dié in 1976.

Diocesan Almoner of the ACI, JICF, FSCF, the Boys Scouts and Girl Guides, Kuehn was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Chartres by Pope Paul VI on July 27, 1978, receiving his episcopal consecration from Bishop Jean-Félix-Albert-Marie Vilnet, assisted by Archbishop Eugène-Marie Ernoult and his elder brother, Bishop Louis Kuehn. The see of Chartres was vacated on the previous May 6, following the demise of Msgr. Roger Michon.

A simple man who refused splendour and was always open to dialogue, he introduced in his diocese the creation of pastoral teams, strengthened collaboration between religious and laity, welcomed new communities, oversaw the birth of mission workers and ordered the first two permanent deacons of the Diocese.

Resigning from office at 67 years of age on April 6, 1991, Bishop Michel passed his last years in his native Saint-Dié, where he passed suddenly away on Tuesday, September 18, 2012, aged 88, at the Maison de Retraite Saint-Pierre-Fourier, where he resided since 1998. His body was transferred to Chartres, where Requiem Mass was celebrated at the Notre Dame Cathedral on Saturday, September 22, at 15 hrs., presided by Bishop Michel Pansard. Interment followed in the cathedral crypt, in accordance with the late bishop's request.
