ARCHER L. MEADE,died of dropsy. His son, EMMETT MEADE verified the information on him at his death.

According to his memorial stone, he served with the Confederate States of America in Company A, 22 Va. Cav.

Archer's parents were Nathan Thacker Meade, Sr. (1821-1901) and Mary Elizabeth Jessee (1822-1902). Records show Nathan and Mary had 14 children:

Archer married first, Mary Ellen "Polly" Baker on March 1, 1865, according to Russell County marriage records. He was 21 and she was 23. Mary Ellen "Polly" Baker Meade was born Dec. 14, 1840, died 1899 and was the daughter of James and "Hila" Hiley J. Johnson.

From the union to Mary "Polly" Baker Meade, the following children were born:

Hiley Hila J. Meade, (1866-1928). Married Joseph Silas Castle, son of Silas Castle and Elizabeth McNutt. They had 3 children, Nathan, Mary Louida Castle Minton and James
Castle.

Mary Elizabeth Meade, b. 1868, d. 5 Feb 1959, married Andrew Jackson Vance, b. 1865 d. 29 Sep 1927, had 4 children, Arch, John b. 1888, Cordelia b.1890 and Cora b. 1893; married Ellison Dean, had 3 children, Harry, Charlie and Everette; married third, John Ashbrook.

Nancy M. Meade, (1870-1910), married James Baker, son of John and Mary Minton Baker (first cousins.)

Martha Ellen Meade, (1873-1961); Married William Aston Austin on March 10, 1888, he was 22 and she was 16. He was the son of Elijah and Sarah Lambert Austin. See findagrave #95239082 for more information on Martha Ellen and William's children.

Ibbie R. K. Meade (1876-1927), married James Edward Johnson (b. 1873). They had Conley ARch "Con" Johnson (1898-1998), Nancy E. (b. 1900), Maudie (b. 1904), Nannie (b. 1904) and Charles Ned "Nat" Johnson (b. (1909)

Margaret C. "Maggie" Meade, (b. Feb 1880-1974), married Ralph "Rafe" Samuel Austin, March 12, 1896. Rafe was born May 1875.

Archer was widowed and he married second, Katie Castle on May 25, 1899. (1882-1920)

Katie Castle is the daughter of Jacob Castle and Lucinda Culbertson Johnson Castle. (Married Jacob July 31, 1892 and William Johnson in 1868.

1920 Census recorded the following:
Archer Meade 77, Katie 37, children in household at that time were Emmett, 19,born 1901, Lizzie B., 15, born 1905 Carrie D., 13, born 1906, Archie L. Junior, 10, born 1910, and Woodrow, 7, born 1913. Carrie was born in 1907, but she was not shown on the 1920 census.

Emmett M. Meade, (1901-1979) in Copper Creek, Russell Co, Va. Emmett married Lou Virgie Porter.

Emmett and Lou Virgie Porter Meade had a son named Walter "Walt" Jackson Meade. Walter "Walt" Meade was born June 22, 1927 and died Feb. 7, 2005.
