Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was the son of Parents were Benjamin I Eggleston (1787-1856) and Esther Archer Eggleston (1788-1863.) A native of New York, he enlisted as a private in an Ohio volunteer regiment, was promoted through the ranks to Colonel in command of the 1st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. For his service and merit in the Atlanta Campaign, May 1 to September 8, 1864, he was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865. His last military service and action was in the Georgia Raid, April 24, 1865. After the war he remained in the south and ran for governor of Mississippi in 1868, but was defeated. He is listed among the founders of the Republican party in Mississippi and was prominent in the politics of the state from the Reconstruction Convention in 1868 until 1876.
