Medal of Honor recipient. He was one of a shore party sent from the USS 'Pampang' to capture the village of Mundang on a Philippine island in 1911. He was ordered to stand guard while some others scouted the area. When the guards came under attack and called for help he was one of the first on the scene. When his rifle jammed he charged the enemy with it using it as a club. He then drew his pistol and chased the fleeing enemy.
