US Senator. A gentleman farmer, his first political appointment was as justice of the peace of Scituate, Massachusetts. He was elected as a Senator from Massachusetts to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of James Fenner, and served from October 26, 1807 to March 3, 1811. He served as speaker at the Rhode Island House of Representatives in 1821 and 1822.
