Rhode Island Governor. He graduated from Providence College in 1931, attended Cornell University, (1931 to 1932) and graduated from Boston University Law School in 1935. After being admitted to the bar, he practiced law and served as town solicitor of North Providence, Rhode Island, in 1937. During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. After the war, he was elected Chairman of the Rhode Island Veterans' Bonus Board and served on the staff of U.S. Senator Theodore Francis Green, (1948 to 1956). He also was, Chairman of the North Providence Democratic town committee, the Rhode Island Secretary of State, (1957 to 1958) and served as the 57th Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island, (1959 to 1961). In 1961, he was elected as a Democrat the 65th Governor of Rhode Island, serving until 1963. During his single term, a family court was established and Rhode Island held its first one-day, one-place Democratic and Republican primaries. After leaving office, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
