Sidney Banks Upton, 89, a long time resident of Royal Oak, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, October 3, 2012. He was predeceased by his wife, Rosella Hunt, and is survived by many in-laws and nieces and nephews.

Sid, the youngest of seven children, was born in Sylvarena, Mississippi, to William Denson and Emma Upton, and moved to Royal Oak when he was 9.

Sid proudly served in the United States Army in Panama and the Far East. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service, and volunteered for over 25 years at William Beaumont Hospital, chalking up over 18,000 hours of volunteer time. He loved to walk and was all over the city, often traveling 8-10 miles per day.

Sid always enjoyed the simple things of life and loved his visits to his Canadian family where Rosella's family resides. He took great pride in pre-planning his arrangements for which his family is grateful.

Special friend, Ray Warner, a fellow volunteer at Beaumont Hospital, was his constant companion and caregiver these last few months, and the family is grateful for his friendship and dedication.

Visitation at Hopcroft Funeral Home, 31145 John R, Madison Heights, Friday 5-7 pm, services at the funeral home 11 am Saturday, followed by graveside service at Roseland Park Cemetery, Rev. Bill Brooks presiding.

Family asks that any donation in Sid's memory be made to Hospice of Michigan.
