Berlin Octogenarian Was With Union Army in Civil War
Berlin, Feb 8—John A Miller, aged 88, veteran of the Civil War and retired Somerset County farmer, died last night at his home on East Main Street, following an illness of a year of a complication of diseases. Mr. Miller had been bedfast for the past several weeks. Mr. Miller was one of the first Somerset County farmers who settled in the Moxham section of Johnstown some 50 years ago and worked for several years at the steel mills in that section. The deceased vividly recalled during the last few years of his life the time he entered the service of the Union Army. He was 16 years of age and was paid $1,500 to fight in place of Josiah Long of Friedens, an older man who did not wish to leave his family. Mr. Miller served in the infantry. An older brother, Mose, likewise served in the Union Army, serving an enlistment with a Shanksville contingent. John A. Miller was born April 12, 1849, near Shanksville, being a son of Abe and Leah (Gnagey) Miller. Mr. Miller was 30 years old when he moved to Johnstown. He remained in that city seven or eight years following the flood, and then removed to a farm between Johnstown and South Fork. Mr. Miller's wife, Sarah (Leese) Miller, passed away in 1922. Surviving are 105 descendants, eight children, 39 grandchildren, and 58 great-grandchildren. He was a brother of Joseph A. Miller of Somerset and a half-brother of Amanda Price of Scalp Level and Hette Cook of Baltimore, Md. The surviving children are: Mrs. Amanda Walker of Somerset R. D,; Albert L. Miller of 'Berlin; Nelson Miller of Johnstown; Lueman E Miller of Houston, Tx.; Jacob E. Miller of Salix; Mrs. Sarah Ellen Combecker of Somerset; Mrs. Effie Hood of Somerset; and Moxham M. Miller of San Diego, Cal. The remains were prepared for burial at the J. N. Johnson & Son Funeral Home here. Arrangements for the funeral have not been completed, but interment will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetary.
