After high school in Utah, he attended Sacramento City College, before joining the U.S. Army in early 1942. He rose to the rank of sergeant in the Eastern Defense Command. At this time, he met and married Carol Alden Costello, who was his loving wife for the next 56 years until her passing in 1999. Lewis and Carol had three children, Richard, Hjordis (Jodee) and Keith.
After his Army enlistment commitment ended, Lewis worked as a stenographer for the 11th Naval District before becoming a court reporter for the San Diego Municipal Court, a position he held for 28 years. At the time of his retirement, he was the last remaining court reporter in San Diego to use shorthand rather than a machine for recording court proceedings.
After his retirement Lewis became involved in the House of Denmark in Balboa Park where he served three terms as president. Lewis and Carol traveled often to Europe, especially to their homelands of Denmark and Ireland, until Carol was diagnosed with Parkinsons, at which time Lewis dedicated his time to her support and well being.
After her passing, Lewis enjoyed the company of his children in travels to Zion National Park and his home state of Utah. As a grandfather "Papa" supported and encouraged his three grandchildren, Jonathan and Joslynn Burkett and Matthew Christensen in their musical, artistic and athletic pursuits.
