Gold Medal Olympic Champion. Gibbons was captain of the American basketball team which won the gold medal at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany. In the early 1930s, he played basketball at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, and after graduating, he joined the Amateur Athletic Union league and played for several teams. It was as a member of the 1935 AAU National Champion McPherson Oilers, that he qualified for the 1936 Olympic team. The Berlin games saw basketball as an Olympic sport for the first time as the American team went 8-0 to capture the gold medal. Gibbons went on to teach and coach at UCLA before joining Phillips Oil where he made his career in the petroleum industry.
