Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Before the war he was a banker and served as an officer in the "Rochester Light Guards," a part of the New York Militia. In 1861, the Governor of New York State, J. S. Dickenson, appointed him Colonel in command of the 89th Infantry Regiment, New York Volunteers. He served with the 89th the entire Civil War with Major General Ambrose Burnside in North Carolina and during the Peninsular Campaign, participating in the battles of South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Fair Oaks, and then the last major battle, Appomattox Court House. In the fall of 1864, he served as the 4th Brigade Commander, 1st Division, 24th Army Corps, under Major General Gibbons and was present at the surrender of General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. For meretricious service he was appointed Brevet Brigadier General of Volunteers on March 13, 1865 and was mustered out of the army August 3, 1865. After the war, he was a stockbroker, real estate agent, and helped veterans as a U.S. pension claim agent.
