Major League Baseball Player. Born Leslie Clyde Mueller, he attended Belleville Township High School prior to signing with the Detroit Tigers as a pitcher and marking his Major League debut with them on August 15th, 1941; he pitched in 4 games that year. After yielding three seasons due to service with the United States Army during World War II, Mueller returned to the Tigers in 1945 and earned a spot within Detroit's starting rotation that included Hal Newhouser and Dizzy Trout. In what may perhaps be Mueller's career highlight, he recorded a remarkable 19 2/3 innings pitched effort only allowing 1 run against the Philadelphia Athletics at Shibe Park on July 21st, 1945. The game would end in a 1 to 1 tie due to darkness. He contributed 6 victories as the Tigers were en route to capturing the World Series and experienced his final Major League game, when he pitched in 1 inning and recorded 2 strikeouts in game 1 of the 1945 Fall Classic. In 30 regular season games, he compiled a 6 win 8 loss record with a lifetime 3.78 ERA in 147 innings pitched. After retiring from baseball, he co-operated his family's furniture store.
