Born in County Clare, Ireland about 1838. Enlisted, age 15, in New York City, April 13, 1853, to serve 5 years as Musician in the Regular Army, assigned to Battery I, 3d U.S. Artillery; arrived at Fort Yuma, California, July 14, 1854; transferred to Battery A, same Regiment, March 31, 1857; honorably discharged at Fort Yuma, April 13, 1858; at the time of his death the Yuma Arizona Sentinel stated:
Mr. Costello was one of the oldest settlers of Yuma, having come here from San Diego, as a drummer boy under Major Heintzelman. For years he was a courier making many hazardous trips through the Indian county. He was connected with the survey of the Gadsden purchase and for many years the trusted messenger of Jack Hinton and W.B. Hooper. During the early days he suffered many hardships, which perhaps, was the cause of his death. Died at Yuma, A.T., November 26, 1885, aged 45. (ASU bios)
