Obituary of Artis Ashley, Sr.

Artis Ashley, Sr., 84, of Atlantic City went home to be with his Savior on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at home, surrounded by his loving family.

Artis, affectionately called "Pop" by his family, was born on January 21, 1932, in Fowlstown, Georgia to the late Julius Ashley and Betty Collins.

"Pop" relocated to New Jersey in 1954, after being honorably discharged from the United States Army, where he served as a Corporal. Once here, he met the love of his life, the late Rev. Dr. Rhoda Ashley, Emeritus. Their union in 1955, brought forth four children: Artis Ashley, Jr., Craig Ashley, Sr., Rosalind and David Ashley.

Artis worked for the Atlantic City School Board for over 34 years. He was known for being outside in his yard, tending to his garden and polishing his Caddie. He spoke to everyone passing by and was a permanent fixture in the Midtown area of Atlantic City.

Preceding Artis in his death, his father, Julius Ashley, his son, David, his loving wife, Rhoda, his mother, Betty and nine siblings: Charlie, Jennell, Raymond, John D (“JD”), Rachel, Anniemae, Viola, Inez and Juanita.

He's survived by his children: Artis, Jr., Craig, Sr. (Mary) and his baby girl, Rosalind; two grandchildren, LaMia and Craig Ashley, Jr. (Meliss); three great-grandchildren, Nevaeh, Neah and Nadia Ashley; two brother-in-laws, Alan and Eugene Rice; three sister-in-laws, Deloise Ashley, Audrey Rice and Evangelist Hannah Boone. A special friend, Emma Forth. A special daughter-in-law, Terry Hamilton and a host of cousins and friends. We can't forget his beloved cat, Light-Light.

Services will be held on April 10, 2016 at 11 am (Viewing from 10-11) - Resurrection New Covenant Church, 936 Baltic Ave., inside of Saint Andrews across from Pennsylvania Avenue School in Atlantic City, NJ 08401. Burial will be held in Greenwood Cemetery, Pleasantville. Repast immediately following at Community Baptist Church, 234 N. New Jersey Ave., Atlantic City, NJ 08401.
