Abell, Usher and Edith

Memorial graveside service will be held for Usher Abell, 87, and Edith Barnes Parrish Abell, 89, of Vermillion, S.D., at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, in East Side Cemetery in Martin. Mr. and Mrs. Abell both died in Vermillion, S.D., at different dates and were cremated at the time of their death. Mr. Abell was born May 6, 1915, in Barlow, Ky., to the late Lyman and Gladys Wilson Abell. He graduated from high school in Paducah, Ky., and received degrees in violin performance from Murray State University in Murray, Ky., and the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo. He married Edith Barnes Parrish on Aug. 27, 1939, in Martin. He taught violin at Ouachita College in Arkadelphia, Ark., and was concertmaster of the Arkansas Symphony in Little Rock from 1939-42. He served as a musician in the U.S. Navy from 1942-45, and in 1946, he joined the faculty at the University of South Dakota as an instructor in violin. In 1952, he became chairman of the university Music Department, a position he held until 1969. He became a moving force in music throughout the region during his 16 years as chairman.

Mrs. Abell was born Oct. 1, 1916, in Martin, to the late Ottis and Maggie Barnes Parrish. She graduated from Martin High School in 1935. After two years attending UT Martin, she transferred to Murray (Ky.) State University, where she majored in music and met her husband, Usher Abell. She taught grade school music in Arkadelphia, Ark. They moved to Vermillion, S.D., in 1946 where she played in a number of local symphonies and taught private music lessons for many years. They are survived by a son, Tom and wife Margaret Tidd with children, Thomas and Katherine of Jackson, Miss.; a daughter-in-law, Lydia Abell of Memphis with children, Jessica of Chicago, Ill., Rosie of San Esteban, Chile, and Peter of Memphis; and two great-grandchildren, Clara Vicente and Margarita Vicente of San Esteban, Chile. They were preceded in death by a son, Jack Abell. She was also joined in death by two brothers, Jack Parrish and William Parrish and a sister, Joy Parrish Wooten.
