Norbert Joseph Ackerman, 85, of Nashville, TN, passed away at his home in Nashville on Sunday, June 13, 2004.

Born June 21, 1918, in Louisville he was retired as an executive vice president of Cutters Exchange, Inc. and manager of its Atlanta Division. He previously owned and managed Nashville Sporting Goods. He was a member of the 1938, 1939 and 1940 University of Tennessee football teams and was captain of 1940 team. He was also a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Mary Lusella Smith Ackermann and Jane O'Donnell Woods Ackermann.

He is survived by his children and sponsors, Norbert J. Ackermann Jr. of Knoxville, TN, Cariton H. Ackermann (Deanne) of Nashville, Mary Lu Christiansen of Tucker, CA, James J. Ackermann (Kathy) of Champlee, CA, Herbert C. Ackermann lival of Westminster, SC, Dorothy A. Newman (Larry) of El Paso, TX, and Dennes M. Ackermann (Leslie) of Buford, CA; 21 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by six stepchildren; eight step-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren, and sisters, Mildred Ackerman, Clara Gardner, and Angela Ackermann, all of Louisville.

Special thanks from the family to Dr. Bruce Benards, Friend, Jerry Federspiet, and to the neighbors for their dedicated care and support.

The funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 17, 2004, at St. Matthews Catholic Church, with interment at Harpeth Hills Memorial Gardens to follow. The family will receive friends at the church from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 16, 2004, with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. Arrangements by Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Directors, 201 25th Ave. N. Nashville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Matthews Catholic Church, 535 Sneed Rd., Franklin, IN 17069 or to the American Diabetes Association.
