Weather Was Factor In Fatal Hancock County Crash

Police said weather was a factor in a fatal rollover crash in Hancock County early Thursday. Alvin Allison, 72, of Chester, died in the single-vehicle crash in Newell on state Route 2 around 7:30 a.m. Police said Allison was traveling south and lost control. When the vehicle overturned, he was ejected and pinned beneath it. When asked if weather was a factor, Chief Deputy Todd Murray said, "I'm sure. Roads are snow-covered (and) icy. Absolutely." Investigators said Allison was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. It was not clear if he may have survived if he was belted, but investigators said it definitely would have helped his chances. The road was closed until around 11 a.m. while crews cleared the scene and accident reconstructionists worked to determine a cause. About a half-inch of ice coated the area where the crash happened. Across the street, employees at D.T.C. Environmental Service rushed to the scene and tried to use a forklift to help the pinned driver. "There was nothing they were able to do," said Sgt. Chuck Stanley of the Hancock County Sheriff's Department. The crash left drivers stuck for hours on Route 2, just north of Mountaineer Casino Racetrack & Resort.

Newell - A Chester man lost his life Thursday morning after his pickup truck skidded off an icy portion of state Route 2 just south of Newell. Alvin L. Allison, 72, was operating a Chevy S-10 south on Route 2 when he hit the ice and lost control of the truck which slid off the east side of the roadway, according to a report by Sgt. Chuck Stanley of the Hancock County Sheriff's Department. Stanley said after the truck slid off the roadway, it struck an uphill embankment, spun around and overturned - ejecting Allison in the process. While the ice played a large part in contributing to the accident, Stanley noted, "Mr. Allison was partially ejected from the vehicle due to his lack of not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident." At 7:35 a.m. Thursday, the Hancock County Dispatch Center received several phone calls about the single vehicle accident near the intersection with Congo Road. Deputies, Newell Volunteer Fire Department and Chester-Newell Ambulance Service personnel all responded to the call. Members of the Newell Volunteer Fire Department were the first emergency officials to arrive and met several employees of DTC Company who were attempting to offer some assistance at the scene. The accident occurred near DTC Company headquarters. Allison was the only occupant, and after he was partially ejected, the vehicle came to a rest on the driver's side. Members of the sheriff's department started their investigation and accident reconstruction efforts. W.Va. state Route 2 was closed down for about three hours.
