Homer Atwell, 81, Sheffield, died June 16, 2004.Visitation will be Friday, June 18, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Colbert Memorial Chapel. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 2004, at First Baptist Church of Sheffield, Ala. He will lie in state from 1 until 2 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in Harris Chapel Cemetery, Cherokee, Ala. Officiating will be the Rev. Brad Mitchell.He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lillie Atwell; three brothers, Kenneth, Jim and Nathaniel Atwell; two sisters, Beulah McManus and Thelma Barber.Mr. Atwell was a member of First Baptist Church of Sheffield, where he served as a deacon and teacher of the Senior Men's Class. He was given the gift of sharing the Word of God by scripture and more importantly, by example. He He was a master stone designer and monument cutter. He retired from Pohl and King Monument Co. in St. Louis, Mo., after 38 years of service.Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Elvene Scott Atwell, of Sheffield; two sons, Roy Atwell Sr. and wife, Susan, of Acworth, Ga., and Timothy K. Atwell I and wife, Sheri, of Acworth, Ga.; five daughters, Carol Yvonne and husband, Lin Reynolds, of Ste. Genevieve, Mo., Cherelyn and husband, Robert Clark, of Vacaville, Calif., Kimberly and husband, Chuck Burke, of Vacaville, Calif., Debra and husband, William Kantosky, of Lucas, Ky., Karla and husband, Michael Lawson, of Houston, Texas; two brothers, Gearold and wife, Dorthy Atwell, of Lindsay, Okla., Vadis and wife, Norma Atwell, of Mer Rouge, La.; two sisters, his twin, Oma and husband, Wayne McManus, of Cherokee, Letha and husband, James Merett, of San Bernadino, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a special niece, Diann Ford; and a host of nieces and nephews all special to him.Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to the American Heart Association or First Baptist Church of Sheffield Building Fund.Colbert Memorial is directing.
