Born Dec. 31, 1933 in Fayetteville, Tenn., to the late Ernest & Alease Pearl Gray Bates, Sr., and was preceded in death by sisters; Louise Lambert, Ruth Brown & Nancy Tucker, brothers; Ernest Bates, Jr. & Jimmy Brown. Mr. Tommy was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Before his retirement Mr. Bates was a heavy equipment operator and in his spare time, after dark, he walked the hills of this county to enjoy listening for his coon hounds striking a hot trail, and then "treeing" an old coon. This was the best music to his ears!
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Esther Bates of Flat Creek, son Paul Bright Bates, Jr., and wife Deborah of Flat Creek, daughters Denise "Punkin" Graham and her husband Chad of Shelbyville, Mary Gene Dean and husband Tim of Shelbyville, grandchildren Adam (Corey) Bates, Hunter Bates, Nikita (Shawn) Hampton, Daryl Graham & James Paul Nowlin.
