Archbishop Domenico Caloyera OP., was born in Istanbul, Turkey, on July 15, 1915 to a deeply religious family and received his elementary studies at the Saint Pierre School, adjacent to the Dominican Convent of Istanbul. He was sent to Italy, where he underwent further studies within the Dominican Province of Saint Peter Martyr, and received the Dominican habit at the Convent of Chieri, on October 9, 1932, where he made his novitiate year.

Following studies in philosophy in Chieri and theology in Turin, he made his solemn profession on October 10, 1936, and was ordained to the priesthood through the Order of Friars Preachers at the age of 24 on July 16, 1939.

His ministerial life was deeply intense and fruitful. He served among others and superior of the Convent of Carmagnola, and following his return to Istanbul, he was named economist and superior of the community of Saints Peter and Paul in Galata. He reorganized several Catholic Institutions within the latter parish, erecting a building to house Catholic families of the district.

The founder of the Turkish Caritas, he worked beside Catholics of the Byzantine Rite, serving as administrative counselor to Monsignor Varhousas, Apostolic Eparch, and later as Apostolic Administrator of Istanbul, an office he received at the early age of 39, on May 27, 1955. He furthermore served as director of the seminaries of the Byzantine Rite in Italy.

Elected Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Izmir by Pope John Paul II, Caloyera received his episcopal consecration on February 10, 1979 from Cardinal Paul-Pierre Philippe OP., assisted by Archbishops Ismaele Mario Castellano OP., and Jean Jérôme Hamer OP., Resigning the pastoral government of his See at 67 years of age due to health reasons on January 22, 1983, he moved to Rome, where he was assigned as vicar coadjutor of the Cardinal Archpriest of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and Custodian of the Sacra Culla di Gesù Bambino.

A renowned preacher, Msgr. Caloyera was in charge of numerous conferences, quaresimali, novenas and spiritual exercises and also led several pilgrimages to different holy sites. Named canon dean of the Reverend Liberian Chapter of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, he presided a Requiem Mass for Cardinal Ugo Poletti, Former Cardinal Vicar of the Diocese of Rome and Archpriest of the named Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, prior to his interment in the latter Basilica at the chapel of Santa Lucia.

Whilst on vacation at Val d'Aosta, he was suddenly taken ill and died at the venerable age of 92, at Aosta's Hospital, during the early hours of Tuesday, August 7, 2007.

His solemn funeral Mass, presided by Cardinal Bernard Francis Law, Archpriest of Santa Maria Maggiore, was held at the latter basilica on August 10, where interment also took place.

Monsignor Caloyera had another brother of his, Friar Giorgio Caloyera OP., (1920 - 2010), who was likewise a member of the Order of Friars Preachers. Another brother was a Jesuit, while one of his five sisters, was a religious nun in France.
