Descended from one of the most powerful families of the milanese nobility (Crivelli). Become a cleric, spent much of his life in the Roman Curia, starting his career in 1404, in the pontificate of Boniface IX, as the notary officer Rota Branda Castiglione (1350-1443). This was also his uncle, and was created Cardinal in 1411. Shortly after 1404, Crivelli was appointed scriptor litterarum apostolicarum and from 1407 was of greater responsibilities within the College of the scriptores.
The second and far more important curial Office was that of abbreviator de maiori during the last years of his life.
Giovanni Crivelli was also a writer. Some manuscripts survive of his Compendium historiae romanae dedicated in 1425 by Pope Martin V, and some of his poems.
He died on July 28, 1432 in curia when it was in Rome. He was buried in the Franciscan church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli.
