Same publication, day, date (page 7):- "SCOTTISH RAILWAY OFFICIAL'S DEATH. Mr John Black, late superintendent of the line to the North British Railway Company, died at his residence 12, Dalkeith Street, Joppa, Edinburgh, yesterday morning. His illness dated from about the time of his retirement at the close of last year. It was in 1911 after 46 years of service with the company, that Mr Black, by the unanimous vote of the directors, was appointed to succeed Mr David Deuchars as superintendent over the whole of the sections of the N.B.R. lines, so that his whole period of service extended to 52 years. He started as an apprentice booking clerk at Portobello in 1865. Later appointments gave him opportunities of acquiring practical knowledge of all the various branches of railway work. He took a leading part in securing very desirable economics in the working of the line, and had also much to do with the great scheme for the amalgamation of the interests of the different Scottish railway companies at competitive points on their lines. Cool, tactful, and highly capably, Mr Black had been a much-valued official of the company, and the directors marked their appreciation of his services by entertaining him to dinner on the occasion of his retirement. The deceased was born in the parish of Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire, 65 years ago."
