Obituary
Amanda Keeler was born near Indianapolis, In Marion Co., Ind., April 19th, 1840. At the age of 10 years she moved with her parents to southern Iowa. She was united in marriage to G.W. Applegate, April 20, 1856. To this union four children were born, three boys and one girl, all of whom have preceded her to the grave.

On April 6, 1878 she with her husband and three children came to Sumner county and settled on a farm in London township 8 miles west of Belle Plaine, which had been her home continuously with the exception of six years which was spent in Oklahoma followed by two years in California, returning to the farm in 1890. There she remained until Feb. 22, 1905 when with her husband and little grandson George, she removed to Belle Plaine.

She obeyed the gospel in August 1856 under the preaching of Elder Carlock. From that time to the day of her death she was a faithful follower of Him who died that we might live.

She has been a sufferer for nearly two years. Several months ago she became a victim of the dreaded disease, consumption. From then till the time when she fell asleep, she was a patient sufferer. She bore it all with sublime courage and Christian fortitude. She departed this life July 24, 1908, age 68 years, three months and 5 days.

She leaves a husband, three sisters, two brothers and two grandchildren, Mary and George, to mourn her departure. Her faith in the Savior and zeal for his cause were unwavering. Dying in the triumphs of a living faith, we sorrow not as those who have no hope. While the home has been broken it is only for this world, for the bereaved husband believing in the promises of God, knows he shall meet her in that better world.

The funeral was held from the Church of Christ in this city Saturday, at 10 o'clock, Elder W.M. Davis preaching the sermon, a most scholarly effort. There was a large crowd present to comfort the bereaved and pay their last respects to the departed.

In company with a large number of friends the body was taken to Council Hill cemetery and laid by the side of her two sons, Bruce L., and Robert P., there to await the summons at that great day. One son, Harvey B. died in Indiana, the daughter, Minerva died in California. Mr. Applegate has the sympathy of all the people of this community. His plans are not fully made but he expects to remain in Belle Plaine and this will be his home.
