Zelpha Joan Bane, age 84, passed away at the Knoxville Hospital on April 20, 2012. A celebration of life service will be held at the Knoxville First United Methodist Church at 11 am Saturday, June 9, 2012, with burial of the cremains at the Dallas Cemetery in Melcher-Dallas, Iowa. Joan's family will be greeting friends from 9:30 am until service time also on Saturday at the First United Methodist Church.

Joan was born near Linden on April 14, 1928 to Ralph and Vivian Reynolds. She grew up on a farm and graduated from Linden High School. She married Ed Schaller and lived in Des Moines, where she worked at DICO. They were divorcced and she married Paul Nelson and moved to Dallas, Iowa. Paul passed away in 1964 and she married Gene Bane and moved to Knoxville. They moved to Iowa City in 1970 and retired to Sun City West, Arizona in 1992. She returned to Knoxville in March of 2011.

Left to cherish her memory are her five children, James(Galina)Nelson and Mark(Susan)Nelson all of Gainesville, Florida, Peggy(David)Johnson of Knoxville, Karen(Bill)McGimpsey of Surprise, Arizona and Jim(Linda)Bane of Stuart; 9 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. Joan loved her family and friends and her next greatest joy was singing. Wherever she lived she was a member of her church choir. In Arizona, she sang with the Westermaires and The Company. An avid golfer, in Iowa City she served on the board of the Iowa Women's Golf Association. She voluteered at the Mercy Hospital information desk for many years. She loved playing bridge. She was a member of P.E.O., a long time member of the Methodist Church and a member of the Desert Garden Church in SCW.

She was preceded in death by husbands Paul Nelson and Gene Bane, as well as her parents; one brother, Ralph Jr.; and one sister, Jean.

Memorials may be made to Knoxville Hospital and Clinics Foundation, Desert Garden Church or Hospice of Central Iowa.
