Marian Ruth Whitney Adams, wife of Ed Adams Jr., passed away July 10, 2007, in a Boise care center. Marian was born Oct. 28, 1915, in Spokane, Wash. to Alfred and Lura Stafford Whitney. She was raised in Spokane with three sisters and two brothers, and in 1939 she attended St. Joseph School of Nursing in Lewiston, Idaho. In 1942, following the outbreak of W. W. II, she joined the U.S. Army Nursing Corps as a Second Lieutenant. In 1943 she was sent to a military base at Excursion Inlet, Alaska. A year later she was transferred to Madigan General Hospital at Fort Lewis, Wash. for duty. In 1945 she was assigned to Central Pacific Base Command Marian spent several months of that time on the hospital ship "Repose" in the Pacific where she survived a typhoon and experienced another typhoon in Okinawa. She returned to Seattle and on Dec. 7, 1945, she married Lt. Ed Adams who had just returned from combat in the South Pacific. Marian and Ed had two children, Whitney and Lura. Ed Adams remained in the Army and while the two children were young, Ed was transferred to France and his family went with him. While in France, Ed contacted Polio, and as a result the family returned to Tacoma, Wash., where Ed taught high school math and chemistry for 16 years. They bought a home on Heron Island in Puget Sound where the family enjoyed many years together until Ed and Marian's health required them to live closer to medical facilities. The family now included four grandchildren, Casey, Kelly, Marian and Kyle. After Ed died and the children had both moved from the area, Marian agreed to move to a care center in Boise to live near her niece, Yvonne Swanstrom, and her husband Roger and their three sons, Peter, Todd, Troy and families. Military graveside services for Marian and her husband Ed will be jointly held at the Idaho State Veteran's Cemetery, Boise, Idaho, 11 a.m. today, Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007. Services are under the direction of the Alden-Waggoner Funeral chapel, Boise. ED ADAMS JR., retired U.S. Army Major, born Nov. 20, 1917, in McRae, Ark. He had one sister. Ed died Nov. 07, 2002, in Bremerton, Wash. Ed played college football at Louisiana Tech University.
